Synopsis
In the aftermath of the two-year war in Northern Ethiopia, an experienced female journalist
Yemisrach embarks on a harrowing journey into the contested lands of Wolkait. Through
raw, first-hand testimonies, Buried Truth uncovers the brutal atrocities committed against
ethnic Amhara communities – stories long buried beneath the ashes of conflict.
The film takes viewers through the streets of Mai Kadra, Humera and Dansha where
survivors recount the horror of an orchestrated massacre. Women bravely come forward,
their voices trembling as they describe being tortured and raped victimized solely for their
ethnic identity. Men and women alike bear witness to the months of escalating tensions that
culminated in bloodshed, as local Tigrayan youth and TPLF-aligned militias, called Samre,
took up arms against their Amhara neighbours.
“They stormed into our house. They had machetes, knives, and axes,” recalls one survivor.
The documentary presents chilling evidence of systematic targeting – civilians being dragged
from their homes, their identification papers scrutinized, their fate sealed by the names
written on them. Mobs armed with knives and machetes patrolled the neighbourhoods,
executing men in the streets while women were subjected to unspeakable cruelty.
Bayesh Achamu, a widow who lost everything, clings to the few remnants of her past, a
metal bedstead and a rusted box, while cradling the son she gave birth to after her husband
was murdered. Others show the deep scars carved into their scalps, shoulders, and backs
as permanent reminders of the violence that sought to erase them.
As the documentary unfolds, viewers are led to mass graves where numbered markers bear
silent testimony to the nameless dead. Graves fill the churchyards of the towns in Wolkait
areas, holding the remains of those whose stories will never be told.
Years later, the pain remains raw. With tears streaming down their faces, survivors recount
their suffering, their voices trembling with grief and fury. They express the deep resentment
of a people systematically uprooted from their land; their heritage stripped away over
decades of forced displacement.
Through unfiltered, unrelenting truth, Buried Truth forces the world to confront a hidden
chapter of Ethiopian history. It is not just a story of loss, but of resilience of a people
demanding justice, remembrance, and the right to exist in the land of their ancestors.
