23 Feb Nelson‘s Rippled Streets

At dawn, on the beach where the tide has just receded, Nelson picks up his shovel to rebuild the barriers around sand sculptures. His movements are as reverent as a ritual, even though he knows the sea will wash it all away in a few hours.

Nelson is a 21-year-old Brazilian orphan who survives on the streets of Lisbon by guarding fragile sand figures and selling candies and coffee for spare coins. In the former colonial capital, his presence recalls the unspoken echoes of displacement and unequal histories between Brazil and Portugal.

In the pouring rain, he prays to his “spiritual mother”—the sea goddess of the Umbanda religion—for the fragile balance of his life to endure. Even though his existence is precarious and uncertain, he clings to this faith, a belief that sustains him through each relentless day.
