Four feature films that reject standardized formulas to delve into the nuances of contemporary storytelling, presenting tales of obstinacy, vulnerability, and rupture. This selection explores the landscape of independent Italian cinema, highlighting a recurring theme: territory—both physical and emotional-as a space defined by conflict, contradiction, and redemption. From the recesses of historical memory to the tensions of the present day, the filmmakers in competition confront themes of loneliness and stigma through a diverse range of cinematic languages, moving freely between period drama, the grotesque, and generational introspection.

The National Feature Film Competition section of RIFF 2026 thus offers a visceral, unvarnished glimpse into experimental Italian cinema.

Kicking things off is “Aurora” by Georgi Stoev & Nikola Boshnakov (2026, 102′), an Italian-Bulgarian co-production supported by the DGCA of the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC). This historical melodrama, set in Sofia in 1952, features special appearances by Franco Nero and Brenno Placido. From the outskirts of Rome comes “Il cacciatore di mosche” (The Fly Hunter) by Emiliano Ferrera (2026, 114′), a courageous and intimate work, notable as the first film in the world to be written, performed, and directed by an artist with Tourette syndrome; it tackles social stigma and the quest for personal emancipation. Also premiering in Pesaro is “Punk State” by Loris Di Pasquale (2026, 73′), a grotesque and provocative thriller that lays bare the violence and power dynamics of our contemporary world. Rounding out the selection is “Il destino dell’ape” (The Bee’s Destiny) by Toni Trupia (2026, 107′), a compelling dramatic adventure starring Ludovica Francesconi and Luca Lionello, which transforms an impulsive escape into a revelatory journey of self-discovery, rooted in one’s origins and inner strength.
