European premiere at RIFF 2023 of the film “Kemba” by Kelley Kali awarded at the Sundance Film Festival 2024 by the Wind Rider Institute in the presence of the protagonist. Based on the life of Kemba Smith, an advocate for criminal justice reform, Kemba became involved in the government’s “war on drugs.” Although she was a first-time nonviolent drug offender, she received a 24-year sentence for her boyfriend’s crimes.
