Kemba_Still_1

For the section Black Films Matters, on Saturday, November 18 at Cinema Aquila will take place the film of Kelley Kali’s “Kemba”. The screening begins at 9:00 p.m. and the director will meet the audience.

The “Black Films Matter” section has the intention, being the first official section in an italian festival dedicated to this cinematography, of bringing the audience closer to a reality that can no be longer ignored. Nowadays, talking about afroamerican cinema means getting to know films and directors that are revolutionising the way of telling about the Black people and America by offering an alternative to the WASP view, typical of the Hollywood cinema. The aim is to disrupt the inernal existing models through the rearrangement of syles and languages feeding a new public consciousness, more aware and balanced. It is about innovative and original works, charcterised by a strong social intention making cinema the filter through which we can better observe a modern multi-ethnic context and big unresolved issues in the US overview, contradictions and problems which reflect similar phenomena reoccurring, for example, in the individual European scenarios, even though on different scales.

“Kemba” by Kelley Kali is the title of this section. It is the 2nd work of the director, winner of an Oscar for the “Student Academy Awards” section. She took part in the RIFF in 2021 with his first award-winning film “Thanks for Asking”.
