Black Images Matter is the first Italian study entirely dedicated to new African American cinema. It is a journey through the works and visions of authors who have emerged – or exploded – since the 2000s, such as Jordan Peele, Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, and Lee Daniels, who have rewritten the rules of Black representation on the big screen. A diverse group of voices, styles, and visions, united by a shared desire to explore and redefine Black identity in contemporary America, a complex and constantly evolving concept that takes shape on the big screen and feeds on critical thinking, transforming cinema into a space for reflection and resistance.
An investigation that places this production within broader contexts, without losing sight of individual authorial identities in a critical journey that highlights affinities and connections as signs of a common goal: to shape an alternative vision of America, capable of undermining dominant models from within, reworking their iconography and collective imagination.
