Tuscany, 1264. Two hooded figures roam a battlefield among corpses: they are Cathars. Farinata degli Uberti, a Florentine nobleman, has been tracking them for some time. He intends to lead them into a hidden crypt, where he hopes to receive the Consolamentum from them. But in the crypt, he begins to have doubts about the identity of the two.
