Also this year the section dedicated to the animations is full of remarkable works, from seven different countries; at the beginning works by students and short films by already awarded animators.
\nStarting from Italy, RIFF is proud to project \u201cButterflies in Berlin \u2013 Diary of a Soul split in two\u201d, a brilliant animation that focus on the story of a homosexual love during nazism. The director Monica Manganelli has already pictured the region of Emilia and its earthquake in \u201cThe ballad of the homeless\u201d, short qualified for the Oscars 2016 after the Best Animation prize at the Los Angeles Short Film, also candidate, among five best, to the David di Donatello. At the same year film was a winner of the special Silver Ribbon Award. Going oversea to Canada, we find Chintis Lundgren\u2019s \u201cToomas Beneath the Valley of the Wild Wolves\u201d, the story of a transgressive couple of wolves, presented at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.
\nReturning to Europe, to be precise in Czechoslovakia, we have \u201cDaughter\u201d the beautiful stop-motion short by Daria Kashcheeva, who won her Nespresso Talent at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival with her previous short, \u201cTo Accept\u201d. \u201cDaughter\u201d, the story of a father and daughter, was presented this year in Toronto and awarded by the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Student Oscar. Continuing with the stop-motions, we move to France with \u201cSororelle\u201d by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Even and Louise Mercadier, and then to China with the black and white \u201cModern Babel\u201d followed by the colorful belgian \u201c# 21 XOXO\u201d.
